the below is an article written on the young people of the year website http://www.youngpeopleoftheyear.org

Telesales Tyler finds his true vocation in dramaAn inspirational young man who has helped youngsters to stay on the right track has been nominated for a Redstone Cambridgeshire Young People of the Year award or ‘YOPEY’.

Twenty-three-year-old Tyler Mortimer, 23, spends hours every week encouraging teenagers to express themselves and gain a better understanding of their problems through acting.

Over 60 teenagers attend St Ives Youth Theatre, a registered charity, performing regular productions that have received accolades from the media and public alike.

Now Tyler has been nominated for the sixth Cambs YOPEY contest which reveals, recognises and rewards young people who are ‘positive role models’ and ‘give to others’.

And that means Tyler is in with a chance of winning a cash prize from a pot of £2000 put up by organisations across Cambridgeshire, including St Neots firm Life Plus and Huntingdon company EACS.

Since the first YOPEY in 2006 the initiative has spread to 12 English counties and the whole of Scotland. More than £130,000 has been won by young people to share with their communities.

Tyler, of Stirling Road, St Ives, was nominated by Jane Percy, a former production manager of St Ives Youth Theatre, who said Tyler’s enthusiasm was infectious and he brought an enormous amount to the voluntary role.

She said: “Tyler’s got a brilliant relationship with the kids and he’s got a great way with them. They all have a laugh but at the same time get the job done.

“He gives a lot of time, and it’s not for himself. He wants to give back. He’s such a character.”

Tyler attended the theatre as a youngster, but had to leave when he was 18, the upper age limit allowed by the company. But three years ago he rejoined on the production side and now assists and directs at every available opportunity. The company holds regular productions at the Corn Exchange and Burgess Hall in St Ives.

Tyler now works in telesales for a St Ives firm, but every spare moment is spent at the theatre or arranging trips for the children.

Jane said Tyler’s approach was very unusual as he involves the teenagers in decision making and he motivates them to think about themselves and their situation.

She said: “He uses his own experience and has a way with them that makes them all stop and listen. He gives them ideas and lets them progress.”

Tyler said he was delighted to receive the nomination but the real pleasure for him was how the children responded to the work they did together. He said it was important for the children to understand the characters they were playing, as it gave them a better understanding of themselves and their surroundings. He therefore felt it was important to make the rehearsals as realistic as possible.

He said: “I’ve been working as a director for three years. We did Lord of the Flies and then Bang Bang You’re Dead – a play written to raise awareness of school violence and its causes. We looked at what it would be like in a British scenario from all different angles.

“We took one of the older members who played Josh, the shooter, and locked him up for a few hours to give him an idea what it feels like.

“It’s great to see the kid’s response and the research they do into the characters. It gives them an insight into what drives a person to violence and why these horrendous things happen.“

Previously Tyler completed a production of Midsummer’s Night Dream, which he found extremely challenging as he struggled with English at school.

“I remember Shakespeare being really scary,” he said. “But the kids loved it and we took a look behind the characters and it brought up all sorts of issues like love triangles and problems with parents.”

As well as the rehearsals and directing Tyler is also involved in the marketing and organization of any productions. The company has been to Scotland and hopes to go to Poland at some point.

Tyler said the most important thing was to give kids confidence so they challenge themselves. He said: “We take on kids who are shy and timid and maybe have a problem speaking in public and make a huge difference to their lives.”

YOPEY founder Tony Gearing said: “Although Tyler has a full-time job he still devotes all his spare time to helping bring along teenagers in an expressive and motivational way. The work he does can be challenging to make it more relevant to growing up.”

YOPEY is endorsed by the leaders of the three main political parties.

Prime Minister David Cameron said of past YOPEY winners: “It struck me that their common trait was their own determination; their desire to succeed; and their resolve to make a difference.”

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg could have been speaking about Tyler when he said: “YOPEY is leading the way in recognising the contribution young people make – to their families, to their communities and to our society as a whole.”

And Opposition leader Ed Miliband said: “YOPEY amplifies the passion and hope young people feel about their future. But more than that, they provide an alternative narrative to the doom and fear too often peddled by some about our next generation.”

Organizations across Cambs are supporting this year’s YOPEY. They include EACS and LifePlus (please mention in Huntingdonshire stories), Peterborough City Council, Waldeck Engineering, Anglia Co-operative (Peterborough), Redstone, Cambridge University Press, CSR, Anglia Ruskin University, ARM and Bidwells (all Cambridge|) and ROI and Hutchinsons (Fenland).

The YOPEY awards will be held at Peterborough Cathedral on Tuesday evening 13 September and for the first time are open to the public and free. To have your name put on the guestlist please contact the address below.

• To nominate inspirational young people for the Cambs YOPEY, which is open to young people aged from 10 to 25, who should live, work or study in Cambridgeshire, logon to www.yopey.org or send an SAE for an entry form to YOPEY, PO Box 236, Newmarket, Suffolk CB8 1DP. Young people can nominate themselves. Entries close on July 31.

Hey Everyone

So you may have been wondering what I’ve been up to.

Lately I have been working with a good friend to create some video edits for his ongoing collection of Dub step remix tracks.

All these videos are made from a collection of raw footage and video sourced on youtube.

This ranges from original music videos, news footage and even de-classified military video.

The first up is “demolition rage” a remix of “testify” by Rage against the machine created by Will Smythe

Again from the Demolition series the next video is “demolition Marley” a remix of a classic Bob Marley track.

This last one is just a bit of fun a short film made from some footage of my friends and me on the bumper cars at my local festival.

Enjoy TM:D

Dear all,

You may have been recently shoved a pen and paper and asked to sign to save the Brampton theatre from closure.

Firstly many thanks if you did sign, there’s a dedicated team of people working behind the scenes who are relentless in there attempts to save this wonderful space.

And that’s it really it’s a fantastic space I have only preformed there myself once and the venue is custom built for intimate involving pieces of theatre and music, and is a valuable space not only for the theatre clubs but for a community that can celebrate the arts in this close to home theatre.

For many years (although im not sure how many) it has been part of raf Brampton this is now closing and plans being drawn up for the use of the buildings and land.

None of these currently look at the theatre as a space to be saved for the community and surrounding areas.

It draws many similarities to the st ives corn exchange that with the help of local people was saved from demolition and is now a thriving space for community groups and the like it is now used on a day to day basis providing local charities a home and bringing back the old indoor market…its benefits for the area continue to grow.

We held a meeting on the 10th March to discuss the future of Brampton Park Theatre.

At the meeting, some critical next steps were identified and an action team was set up. Our first meeting as an action team is set for 21st March, and our first task is to secure assistance with the preparation of a business plan. If anyone knows of someone who may be able to help us with this, we would be very grateful as none of us is a finance whiz!

Other news includes a letter that has been sent to the District Council by the Theatres Trust.( As the national advisory public body for theatres, The Theatres Trust is concerned about the possible loss of this community and theatre facility, along with the implications that this decision could have on the ambitions in achieving goals within your Core Strategy) It confirms that Brampton Little Theatre will be added to the Theatres at Risk register in July, and asks for a meeting to discuss the plans for the theatre. These people have heaps of experience in saving and fighting for theatres which are under threat of closure. It’s great to have them on board!

Work continues on the business plan. There is a lot of information to be gathered and we’re not there yet. But of course, I’ll keep you posted.

Oh – and there is still time to write to the Parish Council to register your feelings, if you haven’t already done so. I know that every email they get is circulated to all councillors and that they are being counted and compiled to be used in future discussions. The address is [email protected].

Our only chance therefore of influencing the (already half-written) design brief, is to produce a well-written, watertight business plan which demonstrates both that the building is structurally sound (there is some concern about the foundations apparently) and can be insured; and that it can generate enough revenue to offset all running costs, so that it is not a burden to the taxpayer.

We therefore have two critical tasks. One is to raise awareness of our support for the theatre – and I thank all of you who have already written to the parish clerk (the volume of emails received was mentioned at the meeting). To this end, I have prepared a petition (attached). Last night two sheets of it were filled within half an hour. If everyone reading this was to print a copy off, get just one page filled in and return it to me, we would have 2000 signatures. So please, if you can, print it off and get your family, friends and neighbours to sign, take it to work – anything you can. If we can prove there is popular support it will really help our cause.

But most importantly we need a sound business case. Kevin Connor is doing his best to pull this together at the moment, but by his own admission this is not his area of expertise, so he is pretty much making it up as he goes along, and furthermore he is about to go to the States for a week and it urgently needs to be completed. If there is anyone out there who can look over what we have so far and give any kind of help or guidance on producing a business case that will stand up to scrutiny, please let me know as soon as possible. You could make all the difference between our campaign succeeding or failing!

Thank you all once again for your continuing support. Keep spreading the word – the fight is heating up!

hey everyone this is the final clip i will be showing of the production of william shakespears "a midsummer nights dream" preformed by St Ives Youth Theatre.

i shall leave it to shakespear to introduce the video

If we offend, it is with our good will.
That you should think, we come not to offend,
But with good will. To show our simple skill,
That is the true beginning of our end.
Consider then we come but in despite.
We do not come as minding to contest you,
Our true intent is. All for your delight
We are not here. That you should here repent you,
The actors are at hand and by their show
You shall know all that you are like to know.

thanks enjoy :D

So in more recent news i have now been cast in Huntingdon drama clubs production of Abigail’s party!

I have been cast as down trodden husband of Beverly and overworked estate agent Laurence and this is my first production with this club.so there are a lot of new faces and people to meet.

First rehearsals are now in place and the cast have already had their first run through.

The play itself is set in the 70's (i get to grow a tash!!!) and centres around a dinner/drinks party at Beverly’s and Laurence’s house were newly moved in Angela and Tony are invited to meet the locals for the first time.

Abigail’s Party

Cast Photograph

Director: Marie Huggins

Performances, at 7.30 pm: Thursday to Saturday, 21-23 July

 Tony Angela Susan Beverly Laurence

Tony - Adam

Angela - Jane

Susan - Sharon

Beverly - Kelly

Laurence - Tyler

First performed at Hampstead Theatre, London, and subsequently produced for BBC TV, this sharply wicked social satire on lower-middle-class suburbia starred Alison Steadman in an award-winning role as the formidable hostess, Beverly, entertaining new neighbours. The evening's initial good-will, clichés and fatuous small-talk only serve to create a rising tension which finally snaps with a dramatic denouement.

thanks :D tm

For those interested im now on linked in this is a site for networking within the performance and theatre industry so if you’re interested in any aspect of my work or have any ideas you would like to discuss please add me to your connections.

I have already hade some great responses on the site including some great endorsements from my colleges that I worked with at St Ives youth theatre.

“Tyler has now directed two productions for St Ives Youth Theatre. The latest being a full Shakespearian work. He managed the process extremely competently, and delivered the 'product' to considerable acclaim and under budget. The perfect result.” April 15, 2011

Chris Lewis, Owner, Aver Psychology
worked directly with Tyler at St Ives youth theatre

“I have worked with Tyler for 3 years on various projects for St. Ives Youth Theatre. He is extremely professional and hard working and has an amazing rapport with the youngsters who have performed under his direction. Tyler has an amazing focus and a steely determination to produce a first class performance, even when those around may cast doubts on some of the more 'way out' ideas, which usually steal the show! As an actor Tyler is a joy to watch and you know that he will have put everything he has into his role.” April 14, 2011

Jane Percy, Company Secretary, Pico Technology
worked directly with Tyler at St Ives youth theatre

“Tyler's work at the St Ives Youth Theatre (SIYT) has been prolific and industrious; innovative and inspirational for the young drama students of St Ives, I commend him most highly.” April 14, 2011

Nicholas Perry, Sir, St Ivo
was a consultant or contractor to Tyler at St Ives youth theatre

Other than this after the tragic loss of the fringe this year im now is focusing mainly on my summer production with SIYT (a full length musical) im still looking into scripts but as of yet not decided on any. So if anyone has suggestions I would love to hear back.

This will be my first attempt at a musical and working closely with the musical director of St Ives youth theatre, Brian Carter (HERO!) is something im very much looking forward to after are collaboration on A midsummer nights dream.

However all this is in very early stages at the moment.

Anyway find me on linked in, add me on twitter @jabells and follow the St Ives theatre collective on facebook

HAPPY NETWORKING! :D TM

It’s with a heavy heart I regrettably inform you that the theatre collectives attack on the fringe 2011 is no longer going ahead. :C due to financial and interest levels or lack of them the project is no longer viable as closing date for fringe entry is on the 18th and we have just not had the uptake that we were expecting.

That being said the collective lives on and we attempt to find our feet again with our next project. With the fringe festival being our aim now for 2012, we can try and find our feet locally first. The phrase “run before you can walk comes to mind” still however there is always going to be issues with funding and we are hoping to find out some more information about how this can be secured so if you have any information that may be helpful please email ([email protected]) or get in touch via the theatre collectives facebook page.

So what’s next!

Im always reading or hearing about new plays and I am looking all the time at material I would like to use. Im hoping to do something with a relatively small, yet experienced cast, possibly a one act along side others or to take to festivals. Again any interest (or even suggestions) then please email.

However, as always, more info soon.

:D tm

With august fast approaching and preparations for “the collective” to attack the fringe festivals well underway bbyd (bang bang you’re dead) is shaping up to be something not to be missed.

However this being said we are looking for anyone with information on possible funding options available for the arts. Each member of the group will be paying there own way and the initial cost of the project is about as ambitious as the cast performing this piece.

The 3 day run and venue hire and fringe entry costs are all costs up front let alone travel and living costs. And as a new company there is no financial support on this.

There are still parts available for both male and females between 18-25 years old and more information can be requested by email [email protected] however I have to be clear that there are costs involved for all taking part.

The fringe entry closes on the 18th of April and I will be able to confirm venue and running dates soon.

Any one who thinks they can help in anyway please get in touch.

We can do this together “collectively”
